  • PK Preparing for the 2024 Concert

Pikkewyntjies is humming with more than usual activity right now and will be until 22 November when the annual concert will be staged in the NG Kerk hall, filled to capacity with an enthusiastic audience of family members and friends, past Pikkewyne and supporters of the school.

There’s a small entrance fee to pay and after the concert, refreshments are on sale: boerewors rolls, curry and rice, cokes, tea and coffee and ice creams. This is a fundraiser for the school and everyone who can, supports it.

Preparations for the concert begin at the start of the term because not only must the children be word perfect in time for the show but each must have a costume and it’s up to the staff led by Zaan to make them. Something that’s difficult for the children is to project their voices so that the people at the back of the hall can hear them - but they get it right with patient prompting from their teachers.

There is no pressure on the kids, the purpose of the concert is to learn new skills which they will do if they enjoy themselves. Between practices, the school day unfolds as it usually does with its challenges and successes and mealtimes and playtime. The part-time actors thrive on the activity.

There is tremendous pressure on Zaan and the teachers though but they pull it off every year with a sparkling concert which delights the audience and makes everyone so proud of these little people, most of whom are not yet school ready.
