After the concert Zaan took centre stage to express her grateful thanks to everyone who hadhelped with the concert before and during the performance. Then she called three names andthree teenagers appeared on stage. She introduced them to us and told us one was going intostandard 9 next year and two into their matric year and that they had all started their educationat Pikkewyntjies when they were 3 years old. They had volunteered their help, she said,because they want to give back to the school. It was a story we all liked hearing.

For weeks the teachers and children were particularly busy, keeping up with the pace of school work AND fitting in hours of practice for the end-of-year concert. Zaan was so proud of the children for coping very well under pressure and without a murmur of complaint of tiredness.

In previous summers our children have cowered under the jungle gyms and the sandpit cover to get out of the sun. It did put the brake on playing but it was so hot on the grass it wasn’t any fun.
