It’s an uplifting experience to come across a school, struggling against all the odds, yet providing first rate education, in the broadest sense of the word, for the children in their care. Invariably the reason is an exceptional educator at the head of the school, leading, inspiring and executing.
So it is at Pikkewyntjies. Zaan Cilliers, our principal, knows what she wants for her school, sets high standards and works tirelessly to see them achieved. She does so with great courage, a warm and loving heart and - well-timed humour. She is a role model for her staff who take their lead from her and constantly strive as she does, to ensure the children are equipped to go happily and confidently to school, to succeed.
Recently three ex-Pikkewyntjies, two of whom are about to write their matic exams and one who is in her second year studying Psychology and Political Science, were asked if they could say what the school had given them as children and how they think PIkkewyntjies benefits the children who pass through the school.
They agreed that the safe and nurturing environment made it a place where children could learn and grow and feel supported. One of the girls volunteered that the school gave her a sense of belonging and built her confidence at an early age.
Another of the girls commented that the school provided them, as it does the children who attend the school now, with essentials like ECD, emotional support and a community where they felt valued and heard. She added that it helped her lay a solid foundation for the future.
One of the trio was asked if she thought her life would have been different if she hadn’t attended Pikkewyntjies. She said that without Pikkewyntjies she might have struggled to find confidence and direction as a child. She added that the lessons and encouragement she received played a significant role in shaping the person she had become.
These remarks are a tribute to the quality of the school. They are a tribute to Zaan’s vision and dedication and to her team who work in tandem with her in the interests of each and every child. The greatest tribute of all, however, is the bright busy school with its happy, eager little boys and girls, its friendly, empathetic teachers and the polite, well-prepared children they send to school every year.
