In previous summers our children have cowered under the jungle gyms and the sandpit cover to get out of the sun. It did put the brake on playing but it was so hot on the grass it wasn’t any fun.

That’s when the Harold Porter Botanical Garden donated two shade trees which were most gratefully received. The soil isn’t very good in the playground, being stony and young trees always struggle to establish themselves in the face of our North Wester wind. This winter, however, has also brought rain, rain and more rain and the trees are unrecognisable, they have grown so much.

Come Summer, there will be shade in the playground. Thank you to the staff of the Harold Porter Gardens for providing a growing solution to our problem.

Vegetables are grown at the school (not just now on account of the extraordinarily severe winter weather) but herbs are doing well in a sheltered corner outside the kitchen. Our children approve heartily that Jamie, our new cook, planated them and cooks with them to make their lunches tasty.
