  • The Come Read With Us programme

The Come Read With Us programme, led by our wonderful volunteer, Linda Briers, forms part of our Yearly Challenge. Each year the children’s reading books are purchased through this initiative.

Linda generously gives her time, expertise and love every afternoon to help our little ones discover the joy of reading. Her patience, encouragement and dedication make a world of difference - one sound, one word and one story at a time.

FEEDBACK FROM LINDA

Evaluation - November 2025: Linda Briers

The year 2025 has been a particularly busy and rewarding one, with 16 learners participating in the Do and Learn to Read Programme.

We started with two Afrikaans and two English Grade R groups as well as one Grade 1 group. This was also the very first year that the English “Do and Learn to Read” course was offered to the Grade R learners - and it turned out to be a wonderful experience, far exceeding expectations!

New materials had to be created, English grammar rules reviewed and fresh rhymes, verses, songs and games found for reinforcement. “Bibberdy, Babberdy, Brew, we’re making an Alphabet Stew!” became one of the most popular and fun activities of the year! Thank you to Zaan for the inspiration!

Grade R

We have already had a discussion about the “Window of Opportunity” in a child’s reading development stages. The Grade R groups of 2025 ranged in age from 6 years 4 months to 5 years 1 month and their levels of reading readiness varied widely.

We had to provide extra stimulation for learners who had already begun reading , while also including support activities for those who were not yet ready.

Grade 1

The Grade 1 group of 2025 consisted of Jo-Andre Jemaar, Feogan Carolus and Kate Smith and I was so proud of them.

Their faithful attendance, friendly faces and enthusiasm made it a joy to work with them again. Their excellent school reports reflect their positive attitude and perseverance.

We revised Reading Book 1 focussing on story reading, comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. They also wrote and illustrated lovely stories. All three have grown academically, socially and emotionally. Their good manners and teamwork made them very special - I will truly miss them!
